Christmas is right around the corner

I always have good intentions to get my gifts far in advance of the event, but, here I am again.... I had to make a last minute purchase of blades for my scroll saw because I can't find the batch I bought not too long ago. All I did was move all the wood working stuff into another room and set up the jewelry making table in it's place.  How can anyone do that.  So now, the office(which consists of the photo table, and the desk, shares space with the jewelry work space. I recently uncovered more beads and such. Hopefully I won't find more. Things are getting more organized, anyway.  And finished products (crochet, knitted items and the scroll saw occupy what was probably meant for a dining area next to the kitchen. Makes more sense and is a lot less cluttered. All this shifting around of things also uncovered a lot more yarn.  I will never in my lifetime ( maty age) use all of it. I am leaving a list for my son of who should get  the boxes of material, croc...

Muggy weather, that's Houston for you.

No breeze and very muggy tonight. Went several nights without the AC. Not sure I can do without it tonight Got about half the garden cleared today, getting ready for the spring crop. Need to make markers and then put in the marker lines eventually. Then finish putting up the privacy screen the house. I printed up some "pocket hugs" which I hope to put on Marketplace on Facebook. Haven't  tried that yet,so I gotta figure out how to do that. Christmas will be here awfully fast, gotta get moving.   In the meantime, Happy Thanksgiving. Got a few patterns ready to paste on wood to make Christmas gifts. Maybe that will happen tomorrow. My
Friends of the four legged variety, etc. We three girls had 3 different dogs, lizards and tiny fish at one time or another. One of the dogs contacted rabies, so we lost him. But since I was in my teen reclusive stage I did not play with the puppy and I was the only one of my family that did not have to take all those painful shots. The guppies were probably next. But we had to be careful not to overfeed, and frequent burial at sea events were held to keep the tank from overcrowding. When I married, no critters were allowed. When the children came along, the youngest collected small frogs, frequently showing them to the lady next door. I don't think she liked frogs. Children grew up, left home, I divorced, and second husband eventually wanted to get a dog. So we came upon a local pet store display in town and adopted a Jack Russell. Wonderful dog. She was a good companion, and we decided to get a girl friend for her to play with. A trip to the local pound got up a newly acquired dog...

Summer is here

Summer is here, easy to tell. Hurray for air conditioners. I feel sorry for my plants, I can't manage to keep them hydrated. They can't even cry out for just a drop of moisture. My dogs let me know when their bowl is empty. They just come and stare at me, so I know they want something. As you age, as I am often reminded, you really need to stay hydrated. Passing out, licking your lips, etc, are just a small amount of signs that you REALLY need a drink, the clear kind, non alcoholic. Might land you in the hospital if you don't watch it. When we were kids, my two sisters and I, mother would turn on the sprinkler so we could play in the refreshing spray. After a storm, we took off our shoes and played in the gutters in front of the house and stomped to see who could make the biggest splash.  We sometimes got to see a beautiful rainbow. Sometimes there were two.  My dogs like to play in water and really don't like baths, but they get them, anyway. From all that waterplay, ...

Best garden ever

When I moved from the Dallas area to Houston last August with my companion Libby (a darling chihuahua/terrier), I felt like a vagabond. My van was loaded with all my clothes and essentials, with no empty space. I had packed everything I had boxes for in the home I left, with a heavy heart after losing my husband of 36 years. He had succumed after 20 years of various health issues, then finally to Covid. I was looking forward to being near my son and his family. So when I had the offer to move to a house fairly close to my family, I took it as quickly as I could. Weather was great until I neared Houston, then a light rain followed me to the house.  The house had been unloved for awhile, but as quickly as I could make the simple changes, I did just that.  I am still going through boxes. I have always enjoyed gardening, but the previous home had little good space or dirt to accomplish that, so  I was excited on the day i planted my first batch of seeds. My son's gardene...
What a wonderful week ahead, it's going to really rain all week.  The flower beds and veggie garden are going to love it.  On the other side of the iron fence is a retention pond.  When it pours, water can't soak into the ground or run down drains fast enough. So there is a wide pond that will take the runoff and drain into a very large drain pipe.  Once it rained a couple of hours today, the area was filled with a strange buzzing noise.  I am guessing it's frogs, but I guess I need to do some checking.  It's like living in a small swamp area in a Louisiana bayou.  The water may all be gone by morning. I love to hear the throbbing sound produced by the creatures, like hearing a soft rain or far away rumbling that can put you to sleep. The storm made several large crashing sounds this afternoon, sounding as though all the walls of the house would come tumbling down.  The resounding crashes were all too near my home.  Tomorrow I have to g...

Mary,, Mary, how does your garden grow?

I have never had such a wonderful garden. In spite of the sporadic rains in Houston, and often cloudy days, my garden is thriving. There are 3 kinds of tomatoes, onions, lettuce, squash and some parsley. Other plants are trying to develop. I'm going to try some watermelon out in the front yard against the fences where sun is more likely to .shine. Some bad bugs have been nibbling on the large leaves of some other plants, so I have spread some bug killer.   Means I have to wash everything well that I pick. I picked my first yellow crookneck squash this week. Too bad I can't frame it. The tiny salad tomatoes are growing like crazy,  I have eaten 3 or 4 already. Can hardly wait for the next batch for a sandwich. The squash plants are taking over the the small garden and tomatoes are over 4 feet tall.  Each morning I go out and check on the plants and see what is going on.  It's such a joy to see the progress. My gardener helped me set up the perimeters for th...
